Of their 11 releases over the course of the 90's, "The Ritual" is to Testament as the "Black Album" is to Metallica. I say this because of the experimental attitude of the album. Due to the slowed down / melodic nature of the album, Chuck Billy's vocal range appears to be much broader. I hate to break it to the die-hard Testament fans who didn't care for the speed of this record, but this is the album that will tower over the band's legacy down the road. For those of you who haven't heard it, don't think of it as just another Testament album. Think of it as one of the greatest metal releases on it's own.

Shortly after Metallica became marketable, the heavy metal community began to focus on several other thrash bands from the San Francisco Bay area. Most came and went in the span of time it took to play side one of Master of Puppets, but Testament began a musical crusade that continues today. The band's debut album The Legacy (1987) still holds up as a fine example of hook-laden thrash music. Songs like "Over the Wall" and "The Haunting" balance barreling blast beats and caustic screams with tuneful guitar licks and semi-melodic vocals.

While Testaments first 2 albums: 87's The Legacy and 88's The New Order were milestones in the thrash metal genre (with the latter being the best thrash album of all time in my opinion) the band started to slip on 89's Practice what you Preach. With the exeption of the title track, Envy Life, Sins of Omission, and Greenhouse Effect, the album was sub-par and Testament started to lose their edge.

"The idea was to remix some of the older material off of The Legacy and the New Order recordings," state the liner notes penned by the band. "In short, politically this could not happen." The result is one of the dreaded "re-recordings" that several artists have unfortunately opted to do. It is not a coincidence that the bands that embark on these attempts to rewrite history often have several new members, and are frequently washed up. The songs all sound pretty much the same, with the marginal increase in recording quality offset by the lack of spontaneity and passion that came with the young band anxious to show the world what they were made of.
