Info:

Manticora is quite the interesting band. It is a power metal band, formed in Denmark in 1996, and while they haven't exactly gained the popularity of some of their power metal brethren they've still soldiered on, releasing six albums in eleven years. But just what makes their sound so interesting? Could it be their unique take on an over saturated genre? Possibly. Their incorporating of influences such as Iron Maiden, Iced Earth, and Blind Guardian without sounding directly related to them? I suppose one could make a case for that. But I think what draws me to the band the most is their lyrical content. Both of their two latest albums, The Black Circus Parts 1 (Letters) and 2 (Disclosure) are concept albums revolving around a mysterious travelling in the 19th century. I won't dwell too much on the concept right now, but I will say that it provides a haunting edge to the album. Overall, The Black Circus Part 1 is probably a more solid offering than Part 2, but Disclosure is still a solid album regardless.

Info:

The atmospheric qualities found on every song have a claustrophobic feel to them but the pristine production gives these diverse songs room to breathe. The music is heart-stopping at times and the drumming by Kasper Gram compliments the diversity of these classic songs as well as Lars Larsen's bad-ass mid-range vocals.
The keyboards give the album an ominous almost mid-evil vibe though they're used sparingly. The riffs are pummeling and the lead guitar work is nothing short of astounding. The leads are melodic and so well played that they are sure to drop your jaw to the damn ground. Synergistically speaking, '8 Deadly Sins' hits every possible nail on the fucking head. This whole release is utterly addictive.

Hailing from Denmark, Manticora is quite certainly one of the best bands existing today. While not as famous as major bands, they seem to be loved by virtually everyone who is familiar with them - and for a very good reason.
Manticora is one of those bands that redefine a genre, or even lay the foundations for a new one. And the most astonishing part of it all is that they began creating excellent and professional music right from the debut EP (although this one is barely known). True, Lars and Kristian Larsen (the vocalist and the rhythm guitarist, respectively) didn't begin their musical career with Manticora and have already quite a few demos released under the name "Fear Itself". However, it is not only thanks to them that the band is so amazing - every instrument in the band is brought to the state of perfection (the drummer Mads Volf also played in a band prior to joining Manticora, but that really doesn't count).
Hyperion happens to be the first release after the line-up change, featuring bassist Kasper Gram (ex-Wuthering Heights), and also featuring a different lead guitarist than on the previous releases, Martin Arendal.
To me it seems that this line-up change did only good to the band. Even though it's hard to believe, Hyperion is superior to Darkness With Tales to Tell, and in some ways it is even superior to the band's newest release, 8 Deadly Sins.

Info:

This album is a bit of a trick musically, since the darker, proggier, and more ambitious tracks are less developed and have not reached the heights of Hyperion and Safe. Simultaneously, no concept is developed as much as those seen on the back-to-back Black Circus albums, and so I feel that Roots Of Eternity is a bit unique in that its simpler songs are its finest. One shining example of this is the softly sequestering “Beyond The Walls Of Sleep”, which offers the only real relief from the moderately fast chugging of most of the rest of the album. Lars’ vocals are more relaxed on this song, and Schultz and Larsen’s (Kristian, this time) guitar play is soft, emotional, and plaintive. Rare’s the time that I really enjoy a soft “metal” tune, and rarer still (or perhaps “unprecendented” is the term) when that song is my favorite track to come back to on an album time and time again. That’s exactly what “Walls Of Sleep” does, however.

It is inspired by the works of H. P. Lovecraft and is spread over two different recordings, with The Black Circus Part 2: Disclosure finishing the story.
