 The short form of this review would be that this is one of the best heavy metal albums I've ever heard. OK, that's too short so here's the long form. Killers is a French heavy metal band (not to be confused with Paul Di'Anno's Killers) that started in the early 80s and is still active today. There are two things that distinguish this band: First, they sing in French. I'm French-Canadian but have never been a fan of rock and metal sung in French, which I always thought more suited for softer music. Well, Killers are the exception, managing to match the "language of love" with heavy/thrash metal. Secondly, how could I put this... Their music simply kills (no pun intended.) As far as I know, the band has not achieved international recognition and it's a damn shame. Such great material should be heard and owned by just about every fan of heavy metal and thrash.

Both 1985's Bestial Devastation EP and the band's first LP, 1986's Morbid Visions, were recorded with minimal time or money, and revealed a band of teenagers more preoccupied with shocking their parents than creating great music, and clearly still learning their craft. In fact, original lead guitarist Jairo T. was the only semi-decent musician of the bunch, but vocalist/guitarist Max Cavalera, drummer Igor Cavalera, and bassist Paulo Jr. nevertheless contributed a mighty spirited racket on blackened thrashers like "Antichrist" and "Warriors of Death."

Accept attempted again to crack the lucrative American market with their 1985 release, METAL HEART. Like its predecessor BALLS TO THE WALL a year earlier, METAL HEART is heavy yet melodic rock. The ingredients remain the same--singer Udo Dirkschneider's rough vocals are on display throughout, as is the shredding lead guitar of Wolf Hoffmann. Longtime Scorpions producer Dieter Dierks joins the crew for the album, wisely not interfering with the Accept sound.
Standout tracks include such amped-up rockers as the title track, "Midnight Mover" (which contained a truly dizzying accompanying video), "Screaming for a Love Bite," and "Up to the Limit." Although Accept seemed to be on the verge of breaking through to the big time, Dirkschneider would exit the band after just one more album, 1986's RUSSIAN ROULETTE.

Nightwing, which featured future GTR vocalist Max Bacon, was one of the more overlooked bands of the British hard rock scene in the early 1980's. This short (only 8 songs) live album highlights the best songs of the band's catalogue, plus a cover of You Keep Me Hanging On. The 2002 Zoom Club reissue doesn't add any bonus tracks, but the album has been digitally remastered for the best sound quality possible.
