For those unfamiliar with early '80s Swedish heavy metal (bands like Heavy Load, Torch, 220 Volt, Overdrive, Europe, Axewitch, Universe, Saigon, Mercy, Glory Bells Band, Wizz, Silver Mountain, etc.), the sound was characterized by driving yet heavy riffs that were very melodic and often moody. The songs were almost always extremely catchy and hook-laden with unforgettable choruses, soaring high quality guitar work, and excellent vocalists. Of all the various nations who contributed to the Euro-metal movement of the 1980s, I believe Sweden contributed the most consistently high quality material and 220 Volt are a perfect example.

"Power Games" from 1984 was 220 Volt's second album. It was released on CBS records and was a relatively high class affair with great production values and engineering, etc. "Power Games" is nearly flawless in the production department. It is simply brilliant and very distinct, but it doesn't matter how great the producer and engineers are if the band being recorded can't write great songs and deliver them in the studio. 220 Volt were master songwriters and musicians. The tunes on this lp are so memorable you'll sometimes discover 3 or 4 different tunes swirling simultaneously around in your head. Along with being endlessly catchy, "Power Games" is an EXTREMELY moody record. Tracks like "Night Without End", "Child Or Beast", and "Carry On" are ice-cold, depicting bleak mental and physical landscapes through their incredibly tight, dynamic, and intelligent metal craftsmanship.

This is a straightforward melodic power/speed metal album, with most of the hard rock elements of the past works consigned to oblivion. In my opinion, this shift holds a greater attraction, and the songwriting, which was already going strong on Power Games, is considerably improved once more. There is a more serious attitude to this record that does not entirely abandon the band's skill at vocal hooks and big fills. Jocke Lundholm is enormous on this record, and he has shed all of the roughshod, inexperience of youth to develop into a force to rival Joey Tempest. The riffs kick ass almost the whole way through the album, and this would easily appeal to fans of modern power or traditional metal more so than anything else in 220 Volt's catalog.

If Hard Rock and melodic metal is your thing - then you are in luck. This is perhaps the most underrated release ever. An incredible performance topped by soaring vocals... this is THE Hard Rock record to own. Every song on this is a Commercial Hit waiting to be recognized by the masses. "The Harder They Come", "Love Is All You Need", "Eye To Eye", and "Money Talks" could have all been major hits, but they just didn't make it for some reason.

This was an album recorded around 1989-1992, with material that was supposed to follow up the severely disappointing, sellout effort Eye to Eye. So immediately, this album is out of place for a 1997 release, and unfortunately, for those hoping it is some return to form of the first three records, it continues directly where Eye to Eye left off. Bluesy, generic hard rock which is meant for mass appeal and radio spots rather than raging, banging heads at a live gig.
