This is the strongest release since Fourth Judgement. Not that the other albums in between were weak by any means but this one everything just seems to come together. More pronounced keyboards in certain songs bring a depth missed in prior releases. Vocals (both lead and backing vocals) are stronger. Songwritting both music and vocal has matured and the band sounds like they all showed up on the same day. Tracks 2,4,6 and 7 are worth notable mention.

Although the New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement was certainly male-dominated, that's not to say females didn't have their say too, as evidenced by the emergence of Girlschool at this time. Picture a heavier Runaways and you're not far off from the sound/style/approach Girlschool specialized in. And with their early releases becoming increasingly difficult to locate nowadays, a compilation such as the 2007 double-disc set The Singles comes in quite handy. The collection weighs in at a hefty 37 tracks total, and you'll quickly discover that Girlschool rocked just as ferociously as their male counterparts, and that the majority of their tunes had more in common with punk (in other words, few extended solos or fairy/dragon-esque lyrics are included).

GIRLSCHOOL were a sadly overlooked heavy metal band made up of (guess what!) girls! But despite what you might think of a band with girls playing their instruments, GIRLSCHOOL played with such an intensity and a knack for hooky, catchy songs that some of their male counterparts twisted in shame. Despite being spawned during the NEW WAVE OF BRITISH HEAVY METAL's peak, GIRLSCHOOL's sound owed much to fellow punks like DISCHARGE and GBH and of course, MOTORHEAD, with whom they made a friendship that lasts even to this date. The guitar sounds are decidedly brutal, making any of DEF LEPPARD's records of the time (1980-1983) sound positively tame in comparison. HIT AND RUN is GIRLSCHOOL at its most intense, heaviest and fastest, yet the songs were really memorable and had this had a more "subtle" production it would have been an international hit.

One of those long-lost footnotes in metal history, Skrapp Mettle consisted of mostly anonymous musicians who came together to record one album of rather pedestrian rock metal, though the lyrics are at times quite over the top and certainly not to be taken at all seriously ("That Load", with its anthemic chorus of "swallow that load!" is simply hilarious). The one known quantity here is vocalist Jeff Scott Soto, who's apparently quite adept at the anonymous singing bit (he was also the "secret" vocalist in Kryst The Conqueror) as well as some serious work for guitar virtuosos Yngwie Malmsteen and Axel Rudi Pell. The one album here, Sensitive, really didn't make much noise and the band (if it was ever a band at all) quickly disappeared, never to be heard from again.

Having been cleared earlier in the year in another lawsuit concerning the supposedly suicide-inducing subject matter of his music, Ozzy Osbourne reinvigorated his sound and expanded his following with his sixth studio album, No More Tears, in the fall of 1991. Finding more sympathetic producers in Duane Baron and John Purdell to replace Roy Thomas Baker (who had helmed his last effort, 1988's No Rest for the Wicked), collaborating with Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead on four songs, and retaining the services of guitarist Zakk Wylde, Osbourne brought his music into the '90s. Songs like "Desire" and "S.I.N." had an energetic, contemporary metal sound, and Osbourne effectively changed gears to turn out gentle ballads like "Mama, I'm Coming Home," which gave him his first U.S. Top 40 hit on his own.

Legion's Lethal Liberty is a fairly rare example of thrash metal from Spain, maybe not too common in the old days. The band's debut album does not deviate too much from the usual standards except for some notably positive overall feel which is not a bad thing at all. There seems to be more emphasis on heavy riffs than sheer speed, though this album is by no means a slug. At best the formula results in some fairly nice tracks like Rhythm Rider and Possessed, at worst the output is a bit too much on the dull side. Other than the slightly untrained sounding vocals, the band appear sufficiently competent and all, and the main gripe is just about the lack of more memorable and emphatic songs. Although Lethal Liberty has some promising ideas floating around, the thing as a whole could have used some more work.

Battle Hymns MMXI is a studio album released by the American heavy metal band Manowar in November 2010. It's a re-recording of their debut album Battle Hymns from 1982. It features the British actor Sir Christopher Lee as narrator and the original Manowar drummer Donnie Hamzik. The songs had little changes from the originals, except that they are "louder and stronger". Some of them are extended versions of the originals and all are made with the help of modern technology, that wasn't available when the original album was released. In support of the album the band started their Battle Hymns Tour.

Queensryche's Building Empires DVD is exactly the same release that we saw issued in 1992 on VHS and that's fine since it covers a lot of ground in the bands career and delivers it in crystal clear digital and audio format. It presents the band from their early years up until the release of their blockbuster album Empire and while it does leave out a couple of things that their fans know exist, it is a nice way to get a historical recap of their growth as a band.
