This album is just chock-full of amazing Metal SONGS (remember "songs"? that most essential ingredient in any Metal-record, before flashy fantasy-covers, slick production and good looks became more important), like "Sword Of Zeus" for instance. Superb vocal harmonies, great original riffing and a very intense, wailing chorus. 4 minutes of sheer beauty. Just about every song is built upon the 3 most fundamental parts of Classic Metal songwriting: heavy riffing, vocal melodies and guitar harmonies.

Ozzy Osbourne streamlines his approach to keep up with the emerging trend toward slick, radio-ready metal, but Ultimate Sin is largely unsuccessful, as the performances are flat and uninspired and the material lacks much variety. There are some good moments, including the single "Shot in the Dark," but overall, Ultimate Sin is unable to push past the level of mediocrity.

Both 1985's Bestial Devastation EP and the band's first LP, 1986's Morbid Visions, were recorded with minimal time or money, and revealed a band of teenagers more preoccupied with shocking their parents than creating great music, and clearly still learning their craft. In fact, original lead guitarist Jairo T. was the only semi-decent musician of the bunch, but vocalist/guitarist Max Cavalera, drummer Igor Cavalera, and bassist Paulo Jr. nevertheless contributed a mighty spirited racket on blackened thrashers like "Antichrist" and "Warriors of Death."

“Judas” listens almost like a better produced and refined version of “Murderer” off the self-titled EP. The principle riff is memorable, the song cooks at record speed, and the monotone background chant during the chorus fits well with the angst driven message of political protest. The two accompanying songs on here, both taken from the “Walls of Jericho” album, are labeled as live yet are actually the studio versions that are preceded by some live footage from one of their tours. If you are curious as to what Helloween sounded like on tour from 1984-1986, this minute long live snippet at the beginning of “Starlight” is something of a bonus to what is otherwise a pretty standard single.
