Nightwing, which featured future GTR vocalist Max Bacon, was one of the more overlooked bands of the British hard rock scene in the early 1980's. This short (only 8 songs) live album highlights the best songs of the band's catalogue, plus a cover of You Keep Me Hanging On. The 2002 Zoom Club reissue doesn't add any bonus tracks, but the album has been digitally remastered for the best sound quality possible.

Despite the utterly metal cover artwork, Nightwing's 1982 album Black Summer finds the band moving solidly into keyboard-driven melodic hard rock territory, albeit with a darker edge. It's a heavy album, with a somewhat more sinister overall feel than most melodic rock albums from that era, and has a sound that channels elements of Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, Magnum, Kansas, Rainbow, and Axe. Even though the band included a prominent use of keyboards, Black Summer was an undeniably heavy rock album that is not too far removed from what the metal bands of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) were releasing at the time.

Nightwing is a British Rock band, originally formed in 1978 as "Gordon and Friends" by bassist Gordon Rowley (formerly of Strife) and keyboardist Kenny Newton. Their first release was 1981's Something In The Air on the Ovation Recordslabel and featured three drummers before the band reduced its numbers for the follow-up album Black Summer. The band quickly gained a following in Europe.

Nightwing were unfortunately one of the "lesser" known bands of the NWOBHM (New Wave of British Heavy Metal) scene, and indeed, probably weren't even considered as a rightful member of the movement as they tended to veer in a more progressive/hard rock keyboard orientated direction, much the same as Magnum, Pendragon, Pallas and others, although they could certainly rock with the best of them.

After the demise of UK band Strife in 1978, bass player/vocalist Gordon Rowley formed Nightwing, with Alec Johnson (guitar), Eric Percival (guitar), Kenny Newton (keyboards) and Steve Bartley (drums). They debuted in 1980 with Something In The Air, a grandiose AOR album in the style of Styx, Kansas or Journey. Percival quit shortly after its release, and the band continued as a four-piece to record Black Summer. This moved towards a more metallic style, in keeping with the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal, which was in full swing at the time. The band expanded once more to a five-piece with the arrival of vocalist Max Bacon for the rawer Stand Up And Be Counted. Bacon’s stay was short-lived as he moved on to Bronz, with Johnson also breaking ranks soon afterwards. Dave Evans and Glynn Porrino were swiftly recruited to fill in on vocals and guitar, but their compositional abilities failed to match those of Johnson.

Strong vocals, superb guitar work, driving organ, touches of synthesizer that are used tastefully throughout... all of it adds up to some really good music that for whatever reasons failed to gain serious attention. This collection gathers the best of it into an outstanding 28 track history of a band that deserved better. It features the strongest cuts from Black Summer, easily my favorite album by them, as well as the best of Something in the Air, an excellent album as well.
