Info:

The band Stormwarrior, hailing from Northern Germany, was founded in 1998 by Lars Ramcke (Vocals/ Guitar) and Andrè Schumann (Drums) and in the same year added Scott Bölter (Guitar) and Tim Zienert (Bass). Greatly inspired by the 80's metal scene, especially from the Hamburg Metal godfathers like Helloween and Running Wild, Stormwarrior were able to lay down their first songs to tape in 1999. With the demo tape “Metal Victory”, which was limited to 500 copies, the band received very good reviews and many interview requests from underground fanzines and webzines Germany and Europe wide.
One year later 700 copies of the second demo, “Barbaric Steel”, were released. The attention of the metal underground was once again aroused with this new Stormwarrior release. After many live shows (among others at the Headbangers Open Air, the Warriors of Steel Meeting, and at the Logo in Hamburg) the Italian underground label Dream Evil Records released in 2001 the 333 copy limited edition 7” “Possessed by Metal”, which contained two songs from the second demo tape and which sold out in a very short time.
With a freshly signed contract from the Hamburg Remedy Records label the band released a second 7” (as a normal 7” and a picture 7” both limited to 250 copies), named after the title song “Spikes & Leather”, at the beginning of 2002. These two releases were also warmly received and brought in very positive reviews from various magazines, webzines and fanzines.
The debut album, which was recorded and produced by Kai Hansen and Dirk Schlächter, was released in july 2002.
The cover art was done by the renowned artist Uwe Karczewski, best known for his work on the cult covers of the 80's (among others from Helloween and Iron Angel). The album received great reviews in nearly every important zine all over the world.

Amazing cover by StormWarrior of the legendary Speed Metal anthem "Ride the Sky". Live from WOA 2009. I observed that Kai has put on some extra pounds but his voice is ''on fire''.

Still more Germanic power metal, hardly surprising from a band called Stormwarrior that features song titles such as "Heavy Metal Fire", "Sons Of Steele", "Heroic Deathe", and the like. And, frankly, it's hard to take band like this seriously, what with stage names such as Thunder Axe, Black Sword, and the like, particularly since they themselves do take this seriously. Early Helloween is the prime reference here, with traces of Manowar and Running Wild thrown in as well. One thing going for them is that Lars Ramcke's vocals are more throaty, meaning he's far less prone to wail and scream like many of his contemporaries. Elsewhere, though, all the trademarks of prime Germanic speed/power metal are here, with plenty of speedy riffs and anthemic choruses that fans of this style crave. So, strictly a band for the converted, but at least they do perform the style well.

I suppose the advantage to doing a live album so early in a career is the fact that it’s easy to include all the best songs that fans want to hear. When your repertoire consists of maybe twenty-five choices, well, a setlist should be quite easy to come up with. That being said, I’m a little disappointed as to how things turned out in that regard. Ten songs, with many being only three or four minutes in length, just seems too scant. Only “Lindisfarne” clocks in at any substantial length, so a couple more songs certainly would not have hurt. As for track selections, most of the highlights are covered – the ripping “Thunderer”, the relatively mid-paced “Odinn’s Warriors”, and even my personal favorite, “To Foreign Shores”, are all present. “Blood Eagle” or “Sigrblot” would have been welcome additions to the lineup, but in all one really can’t complain too much about the setlist.

Info:

"Heading North" is already the third album of Stormwarrior, a German combo that plays European Power Metal (German Power should even be a better name), so of course if you're into bands like Running Wild I think that you should try this release. The fact that the band is influenced by Viking mythologies and "music" is also a good thing but don't expect anything outstanding either... That's Power Metal a la European sauce and it's not so amazing unfortunately.
For sure in it's genre, Heading North is not a bad album of Power Metal. We have good catchy choruses and really fast tempo, the general level of the musicians is not bad too! But let's be honest you must be into this kind of music to enjoy it. I mean that "Heading North" is full of clichés and even if it's not a bad release it can become quickly boring if you cannot stand German Power. By luck, the Viking Metal influences that we can find in this CD, plus some melodies a la Blind Guardian are here to save the album. At least we have some original parts in this release but it's only a CD for the fans of this kind of Metal. In brief, if you like to listen to European Power, this is a must but you hate it in general Heading North will not change your opinion...

Info:

The self-titled debut of German Northerners STORMWARRIOR in 2002 had not been really impressive to me, the raw power definitely was there, but in my opinion it sounded too wild and uniform still. In the year 2004 they have reached “Northern Rage” and in many ways they have stayed very true to themselves and still have managed to change somewhat.
After the good intro “And The Northewinde Bloweth“ “Heroic Deathe“ steamrolls right over me with fat double-bass, showing that STORMWARRIOR hardly have lost any of the primordial power of their debut. Singer Lars Ramcke still sounds like Kai Hansen in the early times of the Hamburg-based pumpkins in terms of raw power and roughness, but sounding more mature and expressive, which the band and its songs definitely benefits from.
