This is the strongest release since Fourth Judgement. Not that the other albums in between were weak by any means but this one everything just seems to come together. More pronounced keyboards in certain songs bring a depth missed in prior releases. Vocals (both lead and backing vocals) are stronger. Songwritting both music and vocal has matured and the band sounds like they all showed up on the same day. Tracks 2,4,6 and 7 are worth notable mention.

Lake of Tears first came together in 1992 when Daniel Brennare, Jonas Eriksson, and Michael Larsson left the death metal band they were playing in and hooked up with Johan Oudhuis. They recorded a demo in early 1993 which caught the attention of Black Mark Productions, who signed the band soon after. Their debut, Greater Art, was released in 1994, followed quickly by Headstones the next year. The band began to tour through Europe, losing guitarist Eriksson in the summer of 1996. They recorded a third album in 1997, A Crimson Cosmos, which gained them much attention in the metal underground. They hired a new guitarist, Ulrik Lindblom, and toured relentlessly until 1999, when they recorded Forever Autumn. This album was more in a progressive rock vein than their previous material, hiring full-time keyboardist Christian Saarinen to help round out their sound. Unfortunately, the lack of attention from their label as well as personal problems split the band by the time 2001 rolled around. In the winter of 2001, Brennare told his fans from Lake of Tears's official website that he planned on fulfilling the last album in the band's contract, and he had hoped that the band would decide to help him make one last album.

The good thing is that Lake Of Tears haven't lost what makes them great, the melancholic aspect in the music, catchy or doomy, each song has an unexplainable sadness vibe, maybe is the vocals of Daniel Brennare, maybe is the angelic female vocals, or maybe is just that Lake Of tears know how to do their job.

A experimental album for Lake Of tears, maybe not all fans of the band will like this, especially the ones that love the first 2 records, but lake Of Tears have moved on, never expect that a band will continue to do the same music for 10 years in a row, quoting Charles Darwin, It's Evolution Baby!

Moons and Mushrooms is the seventh studio album by the gothic metal band Lake of Tears. It was released in 2007, and was the first Lake of Tears recording to feature Magnus Sahlgren as an official member of the band (although he had played guitar with Lake of Tears as a guest artist since 1999). Unlike the band's previous two albums, Moons and Mushrooms made heavy use of guitars, having a less electronic sound. A limited edition digipack version of the album was released alongside the standard version, featuring a cover of the Status Quo song "Is There a Better Way?" as a bonus track.

Abandoning their doom and death metal affectations almost completely (and appropriately, for that matter), Lake of Tears take a more traditional metal approach on "Headstones." Released on Black Mark just a year after their debut for the label, this sophomore outing is a noticeable improvement upon Greater Art. The songwriting and recording is tighter, and in what would become a long-term trend for the group, the guttural chants of their prior release are refined, as more melodic vocals are used to create greater emphasis on repeating memorable choruses. This traditional, almost Metallica-like vocal delivery combined with more aggressive guitar work is an improvement for Lake of Tears. "Dreamdemons" is perhaps the best song on Headstones, but the material is pretty consistent throughout the recording. Far from being a must-have '90s metal offering, Headstones is a decent release from a group experiencing a much-needed musical evolution.

This Lake of Tears album is heavier than the others. The music is more up tempo but still very strong, and there aren't any acoustic pieces, like with Forever Autumn and the like. The vocals aren't as clean, he growls a little, but they never reach a real death metal style, even though LoT often gets lumped in with death/doom bands.

The most instrumentally dense, musically accomplished release from Lake of Tears, Forever Autumn is probably the group's finest accomplishment. With its metal-cum-folk dramatics and melancholy harmonicas, Lake of Tears draws what must be an unintended comparison to American alt-rock prankster outfitWeen. It's very doubtful that members of either band even heard of -- much less listened to -- the other, but Forever Autumn's high-contrast folk/prog/metal (especially the sedate and conversational vocals on tracks like "The Homecoming") bears an eerie comparison to many a Ween classic. All random musical associations aside, the dense, well-arranged "So Fell Autumn Rain," "Hold on Tight," and "To Blossom Blue" stand out as career bests for Lake of Tears. Listening to Lake of Tears' mid-'90s work, it would have been hard to guess that the group could assemble a recording this realized and well-performed by the end of the decade. That said, Forever Autumn is very far from being a superior rock or metal recording. It is simply a fine effort from a lesser '90s Euro-metal band.

Although the New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement was certainly male-dominated, that's not to say females didn't have their say too, as evidenced by the emergence of Girlschool at this time. Picture a heavier Runaways and you're not far off from the sound/style/approach Girlschool specialized in. And with their early releases becoming increasingly difficult to locate nowadays, a compilation such as the 2007 double-disc set The Singles comes in quite handy. The collection weighs in at a hefty 37 tracks total, and you'll quickly discover that Girlschool rocked just as ferociously as their male counterparts, and that the majority of their tunes had more in common with punk (in other words, few extended solos or fairy/dragon-esque lyrics are included).
